What it’s like to Attend Queer Prom
Youth OUTright's 14th annual Queer Youth Prom will be a Masquerade Ball! This special night celebrates young people being their true selves and experiencing unadulterated joy, which is so important, particularly when we're facing such a hateful political and cultural climate.
Youth have stressed the importance of creating containers for queer and trans joy and that is one of many reasons Youth OUTright's work is vital at this very pivotal point in our collective history. We hope you'll join us in this work and make a donation in support of our upcoming prom.
Let's take a moment to walk through the experience of attending Youth OUTright's queer prom...
You spend hours styling the fabulous look that you got for *free* at the Emote prom clothing swap. Sparkles, feathers, patterns - ooh la la! The nerves are filling your belly because you're going alone tonight, but with that comes excitement and curiosity.
You arrive and are immediately welcomed by visibly queer and trans adults who can't wait to hype up your fit. You check in and get to meet some of the trans folks on the community safety team as you go through bag-check.
The vibrant music is playing at just the right volume as you take in the space: drag artists, DJ, dancing, decor, food, and activities. Look at all the fun props for the photo booth!
Then it hits you... For the first time in your life, you are surrounded by hundreds of queer and trans peers. The guard you hold up to protect yourself can be let down. It's time to make some friends!
There's a table for you to decorate a mask, so you grab some glitter and release the inner artist while everyone shares their outfit inspo.
As you're grabbing your fifth mac and cheese cup, you notice your favorite English teacher is here. She's chaperoning, which is fitting because she's the safe space for LGBTQIA+ youth at your school.
The clock strikes 8PM, and a dazzling drag queen takes over the mic. It's time for your first drag show. And the talent does not disappoint... The flips, the kicks, the drama!
By the end of the night, you've made a new circle of friends, danced your heart out, connected with a drag teacher, and you're already planning for next year's queer youth prom. What will the theme be?!
